16 diabetes specialists from 13 countries met virtually in 2023-2024 to create FITTER Forward, an update to the first FITTER report on insulin injection technique. Professional disciplines include primary care physicians, endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, certified diabetes educators, diabetologists, and others with unique experiences in insulin injection practices, patient care, diabetes research and education. FITTER Forward seeks to share their experiences to continue to advance diabetes care.

Henry Anhalt, DO
Pediatric Endocrinologist | Physician-Scientist | Healthcare Executive Fort Lee, New Jersey, USADr. Henry Anhalt is a distinguished physician-scientist and global key opinion leader in pediatric endocrinology, diabetes care, clinical development, and clinical research. With a career spanning over 30 years, he has made significant contributions across clinical practice, academia, biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, patient advocacy, and nonprofit leadership.
Most recently, he served as Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Global Head of Medical, Clinical & Scientific Affairs at embecta, where he led strategic, medical, and scientific initiatives, including regulatory engagement, evidence generation, and product commercialization. His expertise has been instrumental in securing FDA clearance and IDE for diabetes management technologies, including closed-loop and open-loop insulin delivery systems.
Previously, he held leadership roles at Becton Dickinson (BD), Provention Bio, Science 37, T1D Exchange, Sanofi, and Animas (a Johnson & Johnson Company), where he contributed to groundbreaking advancements in diabetes treatment, digital health, and decentralized clinical trials. As an advocate and amplifier of the voices of people living with type 1 diabetes, he has played a crucial role in shaping regulatory policies and supporting research initiatives, including the allocation of government funding.
Dr. Anhalt is board-certified in pediatric endocrinology and has trained at prestigious institutions including Stanford University Medical Center. He has held faculty positions at NYU School of Medicine, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, and St. George’s University, among others. He has served on numerous advisory boards and committees, including those of the NIH, FDA, The Endocrine Society, and the American Diabetes Association.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Anhalt is a dedicated advocate for access to diabetes care, serving on the boards of Insulin for Life USA and Camp Nejeda. His commitment to advancing diabetes research and patient care is reflected in his extensive list of publications, global conference presentations, and clinical studies.
Based in Fort Lee, New Jersey, Dr. Anhalt continues to drive innovation in diabetes management and healthcare technology, ensuring that medical advancements translate into meaningful improvements in patient outcomes worldwide.


Lori Berard, RN, CDE
Nurse Consultant Pink Pearls, Inc, Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaLori Berard has 37 years of experience in diabetes education, management and clinical research working as the Nurse Manager for the Health Sciences Centre Diabetes Research Program. She was also a Faculty Member at the University of Manitoba Department of Medicine Section of Endocrinology. Currently, she is working as a consultant in diabetes management and clinical research operations. Lori has dedicated many years volunteering with Diabetes Canada and has extensive experience with the Clinical Practice Guidelines. She has been part of over 100 peer reviewed publications and has received many honors and awards related to her work in diabetes.


Denise Reis Franco, MD
CPClin/DASA - Centro de Pesquisas Clínicas São Paulo, BrazilDr. Franco is currently the Principal Investigator at CPClin/DASA, São Paulo. Dr. Denise Franco graduated with a Medical degree from the Federal University of São Paulo and earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Endocrinology from the same institution. Dr. Franco is a member of the Type 1 Diabetes Department at the Brazilian Diabetes Society and serves as Director at ADJ Diabetes Brazil. Additionally, Dr. Franco holds a Diabetes Educator role at IDF-SACA.
Dr. Franco’s areas of expertise include diabetes treatment and technology, obesity management, and thyroid diseases. They have extensive experience in Endocrinology and have held leadership roles in clinical research and medical education. They actively contribute to national and international conferences and publications in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Obesity.


Sandro Gentile, MD, Ph
Campania University "Luigi Vanvitelli" Nefrocenter Research Network & Nyx Research Start-Up Naples, ItalyProfessor Sandro Gentile is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", Naples, Italy. Professor Gentile specializes in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, Gastroenterology, and Aerospace Medicine. Prof. Gentile served as Past President of the Italian Diabetes Association (AMD) and the AMD Research Foundation. They are an Emeritus Member of the AMD Arbitrators and Past President of Nefrocenter Research. Currently, they serve as President of Nyx Research.
Prof. Gentile has authored 365 publications in international journals with 14,638 citations and has written chapters of monographs and educational materials in the fields of metabolism and nutrition, and diabetes. Prof. Gentile has presented more than 100 oral presentations and posters at national and international meetings, organized several Diabetology conferences, and has served as scientific director for various educational courses on diabetes and metabolic diseases.
Prof. Gentile is a principal investigator of national and international Randomized Clinical Trials (RCT) and serves as a referee for multiple scientific journals. They are on the editorial boards of Diabetes Therapy, Acta Diabetologica, Diabetes Research & Clinical Practice, Diabetology, and Advances in Therapy. They currently coordinate the AMD-OSDI Study Group on National Injective Techniques.


Olga Victoria Gomez, MD

Dr. Gomez has over 20 years of experience in healthcare operations, focusing on delivering high-quality and affordable patient care. Dr. Gomez is currently serving as the Programs and Clinical Management Manager at Keralty Organization. Dr. Gomez also holds a Master’s degree in healthcare management. In her role at Keralty Organization, Dr. Gomez has successfully developed and implemented Chronic Disease Programs in multiple countries, including Colombia, Mexico, Peru, the USA, and the Dominican Republic.
Dr. Gomez also holds an Associate Professor position at El Bosque University, where they lecture in family medicine and develop educational modules for medical professionals. Dr. Gomez has delivered multiple keynote lectures and published various articles in the field of chronic disease management and health system effectiveness.


Lutz Heinemann, PhD
Science & Co Düsseldorf, GermanyDr. Lutz Heinemann studied Process Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences, Düsseldorf, Germany, receiving his degree in 1976, and went on to study Biology at the University of Düsseldorf, qualifying as a Biologist in 1982. He worked 3 years as Assistant Professor in the Neurophysiology Department at Düsseldorf University. He went on to work with Professor M. Berger at the Clinic for Nutrition and Metabolism from 1985 to 1999. In 1999, he founded the Profil Institut für Stoffwechselforschung in Neuss, Germany. He was the CEO until 2009.
He is a member of national and international diabetes associations. He also sits on the Scientific Advisory Boards of various pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies. From 2011 until 2025 he was the Managing Editor of the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. His scientific research is focused on insulin pharmacology and diabetes technology. Between 2010 and 2015, he acted as coordinator for the EU-funded project AP@home.


Zanariah Hussein, MBBS, MRCP
Department of Internal Medicine, Endocrine Institute Hospital Putrajaya Putrajaya, MalaysiaDr. Zanariah Hussein is a Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist, currently the Head of Department of General Medicine, Hospital Putrajaya, Head of the Medical Endocrinology Unit, Endocrine Institute Hospital Putrajaya, and Immediate Past Head of the Endocrinology Subspecialty Service of the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH). She is active in undergraduate, postgraduate and fellowship teaching and training. Her areas of clinical and research interest are diabetes and ramadan, diabetes technology, adrenal and neuroendocrine tumors. She is the Past President of the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS) 2016 - 2020. She is a member of the advisory boards for the National Diabetes Institute (NADI) and Malaysian Diabetes Educator Society (MDES). She has recently been elected as member of Malaysian Medical Council 2024 - 2027.


Akshay B. Jain, MD, FRCPC, FACE, CCD, ECNU, DABOM
TLC Diabetes and Endocrinology, Surrey, Canada Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism University of British Columbia, Vancouver, CanadaDr. Akshay Jain is the first Canadian physician to be triple board-certified by the American Boards in Endocrinology, Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine.
He trained in Internal Medicine at Rochester, NY where he became the only 4-time winner of the prestigious Rochester Academy of Medicine Awards. He completed his Fellowship in Endocrinology at Harbor UCLA/City of Hope in Los Angeles, CA.
He is the only non-American physician to win the AACE Rising Star in Endocrinology Award (2022) and to feature on Medscape’s list of 25 Top Rising Stars of Medicine (2020). He is the first North American to win the prestigious Etzwiler Diabetes Scholarship at the International Diabetes Center and Mayo Clinic in MN, USA.
He is a renowned educator and has spoken at over 1000 medical conferences/events across the world till date. He is a question-writer for the American Board of Obesity Medicine exams as well as for the Endocrine Society Self-Assessment Program (ESAP). He is a co-author of the 2023 Diabetes Canada Guidelines chapter on Mental Health and Diabetes. He is also the co-chair of the Obesity Update and Diabetes Update conferences.
His clinical interests include diabetes, obesity, thyroid disorders and osteoporosis.
He has active YouTube/Instagram channels dedicated to patient education with thousands of views till date.
He is fluent in 6 languages including English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Marwari and Urdu. In 2022, he won the Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award, the Healthcare Achievement Award by Drishti Magazine and was also featured on The Peak’s list of Emerging Leaders of Canada- 2023.


Sanjay Kalra, DM

Dr. Sanjay Kalra is an endocrinologist with two and a half decades of experience. Practicing at Karnal, India, he travels the world to teach, learn and share. As Past President of the South Asian Federation of Endocrine Societies (SAFES), Endocrine Society of India (ESI) and Indian Professional Association for Transgender Health (IPATH), he works to improve endocrine awareness and health across the globe. He continues these efforts in his current responsibility as Chairperson, Education working group, International Society of Endocrinology (ISE).
This international leadership role embellishes his extensive editorial experience, gained in Diabetes Medicine (UK), Touch Reviews Endocrinology, Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Medicine (IJEM), Journal of Pakistan Medical Association (JPMA), and Indian Journal of Clinical Practice (IJCP) among others.
His h-index of 71 and i10 index of 450 bear testimony to his passion for medical writing. In his spare time, Sanjay enjoys dancing the bhangra, a Punjabi folk dance and exercising with the mugdar, the Indian club bell.


David Klonoff, MD
Diabetes Research Institute Mills-Peninsula Medical Center San Mateo, California, USADr. David C. Klonoff is an endocrinologist specializing in the development and use of diabetes technology. He is Medical Director of the Dorothy L. and James E. Frank Diabetes Research Institute of Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in San Mateo, California and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF. He is the founding Editor of the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. Dr. Klonoff received the American Diabetes Association’s 2019 Outstanding Physician Clinician Award. He received an FDA Director’s Special Citation Award in 2010 for outstanding contributions related to diabetes technology. He received the IEEE Standards Association Conformity Assessment Award in 2022. Dr. Klonoff has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh), and a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). He received the 2012 Gold Medal Oration and Distinguished Scientist Award from the Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation of Chennai, India. Dr. Klonoff is a graduate of UC Berkeley, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year, and UCSF Medical School, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in his junior year. His postgraduate training in internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship included two years at UCLA Hospital and three years at UCSF Hospitals. He chaired the SC award-winning IEEE 2621 Standards for Wireless Diabetes Device Security Assurance Committee, and he chaired DTSec and DTMoSt, the world’s 1st and 2nd consensus medical device cybersecurity standards.


Julia K. Mader, MD
Division of Endocrinology and Diabetology Department of Internal Medicine Medical University of Graz Graz, AustriaProfessor Julia Mader is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetology at Medical University of Graz, Deputy Head of the Diabetes Outpatient Clinic, and Head of the Diabetes Technology Research Group. Prof. Mader graduated from the Medical University of Graz where they also trained in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. Their research focuses on diabetes technology with emphasis on insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring, automated insulin delivery systems, and technology to monitor diabetic foot syndrome. Prof. Mader is a board member of the EASD and chairs EASD’s Post-Graduate Education Committee. Prof. Mader is a member of the Diabetes UK Research Committee, a Member of Senate of the Medical University of Graz and Chairperson of the Diabetes Education Committee of the ÖDG.


Eden Miller, DO
Diabetes and Obesity Care LLC Diabetes Nation (501 3c) Bend, Oregon, USADr. Eden Miller, an Osteopathic board-certified Family Practitioner, received her medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997. Returning to the Northwest, she completed her residency in Family Practice at East Moreland Hospital in Portland, Oregon. After recently completing her certification in Obesity management, she founded Diabetes Nation, a nonprofit organization, and became CEO of Diabetes and Obesity Care LLC where she practices with her husband Dr. Kevin Miller in Bend.
Dr. Miller has cultivated a special interest in diabetes, after contracting type-1 diabetes while in medical school. Out of that personal experience, her practice has extended into a subspecialty in diabetes care. An impassioned speaker, Dr. Miller has given over 1250 lectures in the field of Diabetes to health care providers and patients alike, on subjects such as Diabetes Management, CGM Technology, Insulin Pump Therapy, Obesity and Metabolism intervention, Clinical Research, and Healthcare Policy. Her adage for care is that she “only succeeds as a provider if she turns patients into experts on their own disease”.
Dr. Miller believes that a “physiologic patient individualized approach to diabetes intervention is crucial to success. She feels if our nation is to triumph over the ravages of diabetes, a collaborative effort; unhindered by fear of personal scrutiny, and barriers for effective treatment need to be removed”.


Miguel Augusto O’Meara, MD
Fundación Cardioinfantil, Universidad del Rosario Programa Diabetes de Alta Complejidad Compensar Entidad Promotora de Salud Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Bogotá, ColombiaDr. Miguel Augusto O’Meara is an endocrinologist with over 10 years of experience in the field of endocrinology, primarily focused on diabetes and diabetes technology. He graduated as an internist from the Universidad del Rosario and obtained his specialization in endocrinology from the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. He later completed a postgraduate degree in epidemiology at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia.
Throughout his career, Dr. O’Meara has led and managed a high-complexity diabetes program at Compensar, a healthcare provider in Bogotá, Colombia. This program focuses on patients requiring insulin management and the use of advanced technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pumps. He has published articles in internationally indexed journals in the field of diabetes.
Currently, Dr. O’Meara serves as a postgraduate medical instructor at the Universidad del Rosario and is a clinical investigator at Clínica La Cardio. Additionally, he coordinates the high-complexity diabetes program at Compensar, EPS. He is an active member of the Colombian Association of Endocrinology and is an international speaker on diabetes and obesity.


Michelle Robins, ANP
Northern Health Victoria, AustraliaMichelle is a Credentialled Diabetes Educator with 23 years of experience in many aspects of diabetes care and education. She is currently employed as a Nurse Practitioner by Northern Health. Her past employment, as a Diabetes Educator, has included major tertiary hospital settings – including St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, Melbourne Division of General Practice, Melbourne Extended Care and Rehabilitation Service and in Queensland, Logan/Beaudesert Health Service. Michelle has served on more than 40 diabetes-related committees, written book chapters and is consistently highly evaluated in her teaching role.


Felice Strollo, MD, PhD
IRCCS San Raffaele Pisana Rome, ItalyDr. Felice Strollo is the Head of the Endocrine Unit at Elle-Di in Rome and a researcher at IRCCS San Raffaele Pisana. Dr. Strollo is a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology and Biomolecular Sciences at Milan University. Dr. Strollo graduated in Medicine and completed postgraduate studies in Endocrinology, Aerospace Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, and Bioethics.
Dr. Strollo has received two research grants at the WHO Human Reproduction Laboratory. Dr. Strollo served as Life Sciences Co-Principal Investigator and Principal Investigator in two space missions (SL1, 1983, and D2, 1993) and participated in several ESA multinational experiments and Topical Teams for endocrinology and aging. Dr. Strollo was also involved in the EASA.2022.C20 Project on insulin-treated pilots and air traffic controllers.
Dr. Strollo previously coordinated the Endocrine-Metabolic Department of INRCA (Italian National Research Centers on Aging) and taught "Pathophysiology of Man in Space" at the Postgraduate School of Aerospace Medicine, Rome University.
Dr. Strollo holds several professional honors, including Vice-President of AIMAS (Italian Association of Aerospace Medicine), Secretary General of ESAM (European Society of Aerospace Medicine), Vice-President of ANIAD (Italian Association of Athletes with Diabetes), ANIAD Representative to IDF (International Diabetes Federation), President of SIGerO (Italian Society of Onco-Geriatrics), and President of AIMAA (Italian Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine).


Hirotaka Watada, MD, PhD
Department of Metabolism and Endocrinology Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine Tokyo, JapanProfessor Hirotaka Watada is a Professor in the Department of Metabolism and Endocrinology at Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan. Prof. Watada has held the position of Vice Dean in the Faculty of Medicine at Juntendo University since April 2020. Their academic career includes roles as Associate Professor and Assistant Professor in the same department. Prof. Watada earned his MD from Osaka University and completed his PhD in Diabetology at the Osaka University Graduate School. Prof. Watada has extensive post-doctoral experience, including fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco, and Osaka University.
Prof. Watada has received numerous honors, including the Lilly Award from the Japan Diabetes Society, the Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award from the Japan Society of Experimental Diabetes and Obesity, and the Komeda Award for Distinguished Scientific Achievement from the Japan Society of Experimental Diabetes and Obesity. Prof. Watada’s research interests focus on the role of autophagy in pancreatic islets, factors affecting insulin secretion and islet mass, molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance, atherosclerosis in diabetes, and clinical diabetology.


Miae Yoon, RN
Korea University Anam Hospital Seoul, South KoreaMiae Yoon is an experienced Diabetes Education Nurse at Korea University Anam Hospital, where she has been serving since 2009. A graduate of Korea University's Nursing Department and holder of a master’s degree in nursing education from Korea University Graduate School of Education, she brings extensive expertise in diabetes care and patient education. She holds both a Registered Nurse license from the Ministry of Health & Welfare of Korea and a Diabetes Educator Certification from the Korea Diabetes Association.
As an active member of the Korean Association for Diabetes Nurse Education (KADNE), Yoon has made significant contributions to the field through her research and presentations, particularly in areas such as diabetes management in pancreatic cancer patients and the integration of modern technologies like continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in diabetes care. Her recent work has focused on advancing diabetes education through digital solutions, including smart pen technology and digital applications. She has also participated in important policy development, serving on the Task Force team for Gestational Diabetes Policy in 2021.
